Nishiki Shopping Street

Let us introduce this place at first. Nishiki Shopping Street is a popular sightseeing spot for Japanese people, and well known for its long history. The street was born as a small market in around Heian era(794) since there is a well with plenty cold water which useful for food keeping, and officially authorized by government in Edo era(1615). Even today, there are over 100 shops of sea foods and vegetables. And be loved by local people. Walk there, and taste over 1200 years history.

Kiyamachi – Dori Street

This street with small river was used for wood materials transportation since Edo era(“Ki” means woods in Japanese actually), and these days well known for bar street for college students. If you are looking for a drinking place, this street should be an answer. There are over 100 bars& Japanese style restaurants and you absolutely can enjoy Kyoto night. My recommendation season is Spring. You will be surprised by a beautiful cherry blossom scenery. Don’t forget to also visit Gion area(famous for Geisha) at that time.

Funaoka Onsen Hot Spring

This Funaoka Onsen is a quite local spot, and easily missed by people from abroad unfortunately, but this Onsen is undoubtedly one of the best local hot springs in Kyoto. As you find from the picture of the gate, this hot spring has long history around 100 years. Unusual for nowadays hot springs, it has the atmosphere of Taisho and Showa era(1912-1990) and you can enjoy Japanese hot spring culture. When you visit there, please don’t forget to try an electric hot spring. This Funaoka Onsen is the first place which started it in Japan. It is a bit stimulating, and good for the muscle fatigue.

Did you find your favorite? Kyoto area is actually one of the best recommendations of me to visit. You can move to Osaka in 30mins, to Tokyo in 3hours, so please make some time and try to check them. Taste Kyoto and find your Japan!
